5 MATERIALS
5.1 COMMON FILL AND GENERAL FILL
5.1.1 Common fill and general fill shall consist of well-graded silty sands
and gravels obtained from designated borrow areas and
excavations within and adjacent to the Work site. Common fill
shall be generally free of topsoil, organics and other deleterious
material, however minor amounts will be permitted. The maximum
size of cobbles and rocks permitted in common fill shall be 12
inches.
5.1.2 Common and general fill used for backfilling trenches shall generally
be the native soil excavated from the trench unless such soil
contains an inordinate amount of organics and deleterious material,
or the moisture content is significantly higher than optimum. In
such cases, the Engineer may require that common fill be hauled
from a designated borrow area.
5.2 SELECT FILL
5.2.1 Select fill shall consist of well-graded native soils consisting of silty
sands and gravels obtained from borrow or from the excavations.
Select tills shall be free of topsoil, organic material, debris, and
other deleterious material. Occasional gravels and cobbles no
larger than three inches (3") in size and no greater than twenty
percent (20°k1 for cobble sizes larger than two inches (2"1 by
weight will be allowed. Select fill shall have a minimum of 25
percent by weight passing the #100 sieve.
5.2.2 Select fill materials shall be selected from the borrow and trench
excavations for certain characteristics such as high density, high
strength and low compressibility. If sufficient quantities of select
fill are not found locally as native soils, Engineer may require that
the Contractor screen the local material to meet the specifications
above.
5.3 EMBEDMENT MATERIAL
5.3.1 Embedment Material for pipelines shall consist of 3/8-inch to 1-inch
aggregate, or similar material specifically designed for use as pipe
bedding.
SPEC.
