6.7 PIPELINE LEAK TESTING
6.7.1 The entire length of the replacement section of penstock shall be
leak tested in accordance with this specification. The test may be
performed after backfilling is complete, or with pipe joints exposed.
Thrust restraint may be required during the testing procedure.
6.7.2 Testing Procedure: The Contractor shall prepare a detailed Plan or
Procedure to be followed to perform the leak testing of the
penstock pipe, and submit this Plan or Procedure to the Engineer
for approval. The plan should follow the procedures recommended
by the pipe manufacturer and be in conformance with the
procedure described in PPI Handbook of Polyethylene Pipe -
Inspections, Test, and Safety Considerations.
6.7.3 The test pressure for the HDPE pipelines shall be equal to 1.2 times
the pressure rating of the pipe, or as otherwise approved by the
Engineer. The internal test pressure shall not exceed 1.5 times the
rated pressure of the pipe at any time. The duration of the testing
procedure shall not exceed eight hours.
6.7.4 The preferred testing medium is clean water. The test section
should be completely filled with water. Take care to bleed off any
trapped air in the system.
6.7.5 The Contractor has the option of either testing the pipeline in
segments between flange adapters, or the entire pipeline at one
time, with consideration for varying pressures along the length of
the pipeline.
6.7.6 It will be the responsibility of the Contractor to repair any and all
failed sections of pipe at the Contractor's expense.
6.7.7 The Contractor shall provide all necessary piping, bulkheads,
equipment, and materials required to perform the pressure test.
p:V 333.15Q2003 updece\SPECS\SPEC Qdoc
SPEC.
