SPECIFICATION A <br />EARTHWORK <br />1 SCOPE <br />The work covered by this specification includes obtaining all materials and <br />performing all operations required for common and structural excavation, and for <br />placement of all fill, bedding, and riprap materials, within the lines and grades <br />shown on the Drawings. The Earthwork Specification includes requirements for <br />lines and grades, materials, clearing and stripping, foundation preparation, borrow <br />area operations, excavation procedures, handling and placement of materials, and <br />quality assurance and testing. <br />2 DEFINITIONS <br />2.1 EARTH MATERIALS <br />Whenever the term earth materials is used, it shall include common fill <br />used for the backfill of trenches and bulk fill obtained from designated <br />borrow areas for dike and roadway construction, select fill, drain material, <br />riprap and random drain rock. <br />2.2 STRIPPING <br />Stripping is defined as complete removal of sod, topsail, organic matter <br />and rubbish in areas to receive earth materials, borrow areas, trench <br />excavations and other areas designated by the Engineer. The Contractor <br />shall separate stumps and roots from stripped material within the <br />limitations of the equipment. <br />2.3 NATIVE SOIL <br />Native soil(s) shall include the soil that is excavated from pipe trenches, <br />borrow areas, and other structural excavations that is suitable for reuse as <br />backfill or earth materials. <br />2.4 COMMON FILL AND GENERAL FILL <br />Common and general fill shall include placement of fill for pipe trenches <br />and excavations above the level of bedding and select fill material where <br />the excavation and backfill is not structural and will not support roadways <br />or other surface structures. <br />2.5 SELECT FILL <br />Select fill shall include placement of fill for pipe trenches and around <br />structures above the level of bedding and foundation material, where the <br />backfilled area will serve as a foundation for roadways or other surface <br />structures, and in confined backfill areas that are inaccessible to mobile <br />compaction equipment. <br />
