6 CLEARING AND STRIPPING
6.1 All borrow areas, the footprint of the dikes and ponds, areas that are to
receive fill, and areas that are to be excavated for structures, pipelines, or
ditches shall be stripped of all sod, brush, roots, other vegetation and soft
soils, including top and organic soils, to a sufficient depth to remove
organic soils and to expose subsoils appropriate for support of new fills, as
determined by the Engineer. Sod and vegetable matter shall be separated
from the topsoil as much as practical and stockpiled for reuse. The depth
of removal shall be a minimum of 6 inches in areas to receive select fill and
the minimum amount that can be practically salvaged without unnecessary
dilution by non-organic earth materials in other areas. Stripping may be
required when, in the opinion of the Engineer, suitable materials have not
been exposed.
6.2 All areas that are to receive common fill shall be stripped of roots, trees,
and other hulk vegetative matter and debris. All top and organic soils of
common fill areas shall be selectively stripped and stockpiled for reuse.
6.3 All suitable stripped materials shall be stockpiled at a location designated
by the Engineer for use in reclamation of disturbed areas. Stripped
materials of different types, such as roots, dead trees, or brush shall be
separated within reasonable capabilities of the equipment for selective
replacement during reclamation.
6.4 Materials not suitable for reuse, such as debris, waste material, and
metals, shall be disposed of at a location to be designated by the Engineer.
No topsoil or soils containing organic materials shall be wasted, buried or
otherwise disposed of unless approved by the Engineer.
6.5 Topsoil material not required for reclamation of disturbed areas shall be
stockpiled in the Topsoil Stockpile Area designated on the Drawings.
6.6 The felling of live trees along the construction corridor shall be minimized.
When necessary for the performance of the work, trees shall be felled,
lopped, cut to lengths of 8 feet or less, and spread. Slash piles shall not
exceed 18-inches in height. The Contractor shall not haul Forest products
off the property without the approval of the Owner.
SPEC.
