Minor Revision Request No. 16
Southfield Mine South Fan Installation
INTRODUCTION
Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. (EFCI) currently conducts underground coal mining
operations at the Southfield Mine located approximately eight (B) miles south
of Florence, Colorado. The mine operates under alife-of-mine mining and
reclamation plan which is the basis for the existing approved mining permit
(Permit No. C-81-014) under the Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for Coal Mining (CRS 1973, as amended).
As mining proceeds, mine workings are extended to develop and recover the
existing minable coal reserves. Mine workings must be properly ventilated to
provide a safe working environment for the miners and to adequately dilute
any methane or other potentially hazardous gases which may be released as
a result of the mining process. As mine workings are extended, mine
ventilation systems must be modified to maintain adequate airflow in both
active face areas and mine entries. These ventilation modifications are
necessary because movement of air over greater distances results in
increased pressure drops due to surface friction and ventilation of expanded
mine areas dictates increased airflow volumes.
In order to maintain adequate ventilation as mine workings are extended to the
southern limit of the minable reserves, EFCI is requesting approval of a minor
revision to install an additional mine fan, along with associated fan housing,
mine seals, and power systems, on an existing portal of the abandoned
Monarch No. 4 Mine. The new fan installation has been designed and will be
constructed, operated, maintained and monitored in full compliance with
applicable CMLRB and MSHA requirements.
The proposed fan installation will result in redisturbance of approximately 0.4
acres previously disturbed by the Monarch No. 4 Mine operations in the 1930's
o: xodi pq a ed revnof 8.680
f 2/20/81 epm 1
