construction and maintenance of required drainage control structures, construction and
• maintenance of required soil and overburden stockpiles, gravel extraction from the
previous extraction limit west to the existing Permit Area boundary, and reclamation of
related disturbance areas on completion of operations.
The previous revision application (3/82) included ownership information and information
on potentially affected environmental resource values within the existing Permit Area.
Since this amendment does not change the Permit Area, the ownership and
environmental information contained in the 3/82 application is generally still relevant. In
order to assure completeness and accuracy, this information has been reviewed and
updated, as appropriate, to reflect any additional or more recent relevant information.
Gravel extraction and related operations are conducted by SCC and/or a contractor.
Generally, required drainage control structures are constructed prior to any other surface
disturbance. Available soil materials are removed, recovered, and either directly replaced
on regraded areas or stockpiled for future use in reclaiming the site using a tracked
• dozer, tractor scrapers, and/or a wheel loader and trucks. Overburden material (non-soil
and non-gravel) is removed and either backfilled in mined-out areas or stockpiled using
similar equipment. A wheel loader is used to excavate the gravel material and either load
it directly into trucks or feed a portable crushing/screening plant which processes the
gravel and places it in temporary on-site stockpiles for future use. Finally on completion
of gravel extraction operations, overburden materials are replaced in the excavated
areas, gravel pit sideslopes are graded to promote effective drainage and blend with the
surrounding terrain, soil materials are replaced as a plant growth medium, and disturbed
areas are revegetated. Prior to initiation of sand and gravel operations, the Permit Area
was utilized as pastureland/ cropland for small grain production. Revegetation practices
and species are consistent with restoration of disturbed areas to a postmining land use of
small grain pastureland/cropland.
r1
t`J
2 Revised May 1998
