ASSF.SS1VlENT
TATUM RESIDENCE, WESTON, COLORADO-
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A visual walk-thtu of the adobe structure noted as the Tatum Residence located west of the
town of Weston, Colorado was completed by 1{LP Consulting Engineers, Inc. to note the
existing structural conditions. The residence is a combined single and two story adobe structure.
For the purpose of this report, it is assumed that the front entry exists at the southeast comer
with the front of the structure facing east. The two story portion exists at the eastern portion of
the main living area. An enclosed court yard exists at the south side. A wing comes off the
south side at the west end that consists of a coveted patio and enclosed storage aces. A garage
exists at the south end of this wing. These areas were observed from the exterior only. The
predominate drainage is from the southeast to the northeast across the site. The courtyard is
enclosed by an adobe fence that restricts drainage while the grade appears to slope to the
northeast in this arse. This is towards the foundation. The roof drainage from the upper roof
discharge from scuppers at the roof level and drops to grade at the southeast corner forming a
ponding area next to the foundation. Several large cottonwood trees were cut down at the north
side approximately twelve feet from the northeast corner. The tree truck and root systems still
retrain.
The exterior has been covered by a cement stucco finish. This was installed using chicken wire
and cement mortar finish, as shown in Photo P-9. Aaordittg to Mr. Everett Trujillo, who
accompanied us on our visit, the structure was not always finished with stucco. An elderly
woman down the valley use to apply a surface coating of mud every other year as maintenance.
Since the stucco application, the structure has experienced more cracking according to Mt.
Trujillo. The north wall was modified during the stucco process as the projxdng framing logs
typical of adobe consnnction were cut off. This was apparently due to the distress at the ends
of the logs and leaking problems. The exterior stucco exhibits minor cracking at the west
portion both north and south walls. The major distress and detcrioradon is at the southeast
comer of the south wall below the upper roof scuppers. The projection at the northeast corner
for the corner fireplace and potential lateral support has a large stucco crack. Referring to
Photos P-3 thru P-7, these conditions are shown. I.ealdng is quite apparent at the scupper
peneuations and staining of the walls exists. Minor maintenance has been attempted at these
areas without much success.
b0'd OS~bT T0.
