ENERGY, INC.
A Subfldlery of
Defarot Gsnsrollen d
Trensmlalon
Coovsretlre
3507 County Ad. 65
HenBsry, CO 57648

Dear Dan:
April 13, 1994
Mr. Dan Mathews
Division of Minerals and Geology
2148 Broadway, #C-5
Grand Junction, Colorado 81503
RE: Additional soil sampling
Permit Renewal
File No. C-018-81.
iii iuiiiiiiiiuiii
999
RECEIVEp
APR 15 1999 ;
DfV. OF MINEggLS
GRAND JtINCTIQE~OGY
I reviewed the existing data in the permit in preparation for sampling soils to verify
suitability for reclamation of future refuse areas. It appears the existing data is based on
soil series and not mapping unit. Your previous suggestions appeared geared towazds
mapping unit.
The mapping units that you requested fitrther sampling include:
106 Satanka silt loam, deep phase
108 Turley Variant -Potts complex
109 Turley Varian[ loam
110 Turley Variant, disturbed
Following previous methodology, three soil series are involved. Reviewing the existing
data on this basis provides the following samples collected in 1980:
Satanka silt loam
This series is represented by Pit 5 located in Refuse Area SB. The [napping unit is shown
as 1 12, Satanka silt laarrt. It can be assumed that this sample would provide a reasonable
estimate of the soil available for reclatttation purposes relative to unit 106 since 106 is
designated as `deep phase'. Qualitative suitabilities should be equivalent.
Turlev Variant
This series is well represented by four existing pits in the general area. The type location (Pit 4) is
located in Refuse Area 9. Apparently it was dug in a Turley inclusion to a Potts mapping unit
(107) which adds [o [he confusion.
Other Turley Variant series pits include:
• Pit 16 located approximately 1800 feet west of Refuse Area I I.
• Pit 20 located approximately one mile south-west of Refuse Areas 10 & I I .
• Pit 13 located approximately 600 feet south-west of Refuse Area 9, next to Refuse
Area 4. This pi[ is not linked to a soil series in the text but is shown on map unit 110.
