C-PIT Hydrogeologic Investigations
Technical Revision No. 8
2: Site Analysis and Field Activities Mining Permit M-1977-208
2.6 Sampling and Analysis
C-Pit water and groundwater samples were collected during four separate sampling events at the Site from
March 9 through July 10, 2007. C-Pit and monitoring well CEM-001 were both sampled during all four
events. Wells CEM-003 and CEM-004 were each sampled three times, as they were not installed until after
the first sampling event. Compliance well CEM-005 was sampled once upon completion of initial
development of the well. No further sampling was performed once it was concluded that the limited amount
of water in this well is likely a residual from the well drilling and development process, and not representative
of formation groundwater.
A single grab groundwater sample was collected from P-003 shortly after installation on May 2, 2007 in an
attempt to obtain a background groundwater sample located up dip from the Site. Limited sample volume
was obtained from the piezometex, and since this single sampling event there has been insufficient water fox
additional sampling.
A single sample of surface water was obtained from the Boulder Feeder Canal on June 15, 2007.
C-Pit water was sampled during each event by lowering a plastic bailer over the side of the eastern highwall
and placing the collected water into appropriate sample containers. Monitoring well CEM-001 was purged
and then sampled during each event using the dedicated three-inch centrifugal pump that was installed in
2006. Groundwater was pumped until the well purged dry. After waiting fox approximately one hour, the
pump was turned back on long enough to clear the water left in the tubing, followed by collection of
groundwater samples in appropriate sample containers provided by the analytical laboratory. Monitoring
wells CEM-003 and CEM-004 were purged and sampled using atwo-stage Geosquirt® pump with dedicated
tubing. The pump was decontaminated after sampling each well using a Liquinox®/water mix with a scrub
brush, followed by a clean water rinse and a final distilled water rinse. piezometex P-003 was sampled using a
peristaltic pump and disposable polyethylene/tygon tubing. The Boulder Feeder Canal was sampled by
dipping the sample bottles directly into the surface water stream.
All water samples were collected in containers provided by the analytical laboratory and preserved as
necessary. Dissolved metals samples were shipped to the lab without preservative and filtered before analysis.
Prior to sampling at each location, water quality field parameters were recorded with a YSI 650 MDS/600XL
multi-parameter water quality meter (YSI). Recorded parameters included temperature, pH, conductivity,
dissolved oxygen, and ORP. Table 3 summarizes the final water quahty field parameters collected during
each sampling event. Once collected, sample containers were sealed in Ziploc® bags and placed on ice in a
cooler with appropriate chain-of-custody forms. The cooler was shipped overnight to the analytical
laboratory at the end of each day of sampling, which reparted that all samples were received in good
condition.
Table 2 summarizes the analytical results, which are discussed further in Section 3.0.
2-10
Use of commis on this sheet is subject to the limitations specilied at the end of ihls document.
IIBCDEN021pmtecislDataIGENICemexlTR-e~RepomnglCEMEX Report OB-31-07 doc
