Page 2 •
lJ
April 23, 1991
Snyder Tree Planting
Corrective Action Plan
Dan Hernandez
AREA OF PLANTING
# PLANTED
GOAL NUMBER
Williams Canyon
Road Area ~1
Road Area //2
Road Area #3
Road Area #4
Trees were not required on
116 75 - B5
264 125 - 135
63 25 - 35
94 50 - 60
150..' 70-80
- ~g1
the other road disturbance areas.
These goal numbers produce an average of about 110 - 120 trees ~~er
acre after considering a survival rate similar to what occurred on t}ie
Snyder Berm planting in the early to mid 1980'x.
WILLIAMS CANYON - Recovery of the tree and shrub components in this
area appears to be proceeding rapidly. While planting the trees,
relatively large numbers of invading seedlings were noted. Most of
these seedlings appear to be in the 2 to 5 year old range. Moat apps:ar
to be about 3 years old. Competition is moderate. Good soil moistu~•e
levels, high organic matter contents, and excellent shade factors (from
existing shrubs) during the growing season will aid in the natural
recovery of this area and the survival of the planted trees. Because:
most of the ground level vegetation was only marginally affected by the
slides and soils were left intact, a strong natural recovery potential
exists on this site.
It should be noted that in the final examination for determinat9.on
of success, the investigators may experience considerable difficulty
distinguishing planted trees from invaders. Markers can help, but
unless they are periodically replaced marker loss will be a problem 9n
this thick, shrub dominated vegetation. Also, because of the thick
shrub cover, locating small trees except in a sampling scheme will be
very difficult until those trees become considerably larger than the
shrubs. Because oP the rate of natural recovery that is occuring anc.
will continue to occur on this site, assessing the contribution of
planting trees to the reforestation will be difficult at best.
ROAD DISTURBANCES: In Williams Canyon natural recovery will be rapifi.
and will confuse assessments. In the road side disturbances, except for
/{2, the opportunity for high precision assessment of success rates is
considerable. Although these sites have essentially the same aspect,
slope gradients, substrate composition, soil depth, competition, and
invasion rates vary considerably between the sites.
