SNYDER QUARRY CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN IMPLEMENTATION:
This last winter and spring a considerable amount of progress was made in the
implementation of the corrective action plan for the Snyder Quarry. Unforunately,
certain circumstances and events put the project behind schedule and some aspects of
the plan will be completed in the next few mon~hs. The follow!:ng information
explains what has been accomplished and what has yet to be completed along with an
explanation as to why certain aspects have not been completed.
In Williams Canyon, the slide disturbances were seeded in May. An early June
~ inspection of the area with Dan Hernandez of Miaed Land Reclamation showed the seed
was germinating well. Hopefully, the dry, hot spell we had in late June did not set
~ the growth back too far. Most of what was planted was native grass ani these grasses
are well adapted to surviving drought, even as seedlings. They probably wouldn't be
native if they did not have that ability.
Along the access road, the sediment basin has Deen designed acid construction
will soon begin. All culverts, except for HR6, have been installedl. HR6 will be
installed as soon as comments are received from the Cedar Heights Le~ider's engineer
and a selection is made of the most appropriate option of the about on., dozen options
proposed for this culvert. Because of changes in the composition of ~:he lenders and
their law firm the March 31, 1990 date in the Board ordered corrective action plan
was not met and still has not been met. This culvert certainly den~onstrates that
some problems have many possible solutions. The process. of selecting; the option to
implement could prove interesting.
Disturbance Area lil along the road has been graded, topsoile~9, and seeded.
'~ Disturbance Area //4 is nearly finished with grading, but some specialized equipment
is needed to shape the toe of the slope to our satisfaction. Unfortunately, none of
i that equipment will be available for a while. We expect to complete Disturbance /~4
this fall.
~~ Disturbance Areas /t2 and t13 present some special problems. The method used to
work area t/4 cannot be used here because the slope is too steep and there is
insufficient material present on the slope to hold the equipment. This has been
discussd with Mined Land and they understand the situation. They seem to support our
desire to explore other options to repair the site. Removal might not be necessary
or there might be some other kind of equipment available that could do the job.
