Leidich:
I reviewed your 1984 reclamation and conservation progress.
After consultation with Ben Berlinger, the Area SCS Range
Conservationist and Eldie Mustard, State SCS Biologist and
Mr. Craig, the Division of Wildlife Biologist I would like
to make these recommendations and deviations from your
master plan.
The step approach is not as successful as we had all hoped.
The 1'< to 1 slopes are too steep to grow grass effectively
and the forties and shrubs, although growing, are not con-
trolling the erosion as needed. Reducing the slopes to a
gradual 3:1 will be more effective in controlling the ero-
sion. This will leave a cliff face 60-80' high exposed.
T}iis will be a suitable area to develop a raptor nesting
area. See attached report from Division of Wildlife Biolo-
gist, G. R. Craig.
By the end of June, 1985 we will finish a plant evaluation
and give you specific recommendations on plant species both
grass and shrubs for phase 2. Ben Berlinger of the SCS
Area office should be here on June 26 to assist us on this
evaluation.
The Division of Wildlife suggests that the 3:1 slopes be left
on an uneven, rolling hills type of configuration. Shrubs
planted for small game protection and habitat would also be
very beneficial. If raptor are successfully attracted to the
area, a food source would be needed in addition to the nest-
ing are"a~s~.
~QLN~,.c~t(
Randall Hardzog~
Soil Conservationist
cc: Eldie Idustard
O G.
