Mr. Mike Long
April 4, 1994
Page -2-
2. The Company has developed an internal compliance checklist
which will form the basis for a weekly site inspection. In
addition to overall minesite compliance, we would anticipate that
this inspection will focus specifically on site maintenance,
material handling areas and drainage and sediment control
structures. If you or your staff have additional areas which you
believe should require special attention please let us know. Until
we are able to hire an environmental compliance coordinator, that
inspection effort will be undertaken or overseen directly by me.
Any maintenance or other compliance problems identified in the site
inspection will be addressed in as timely a manner as possible.
3. The Company also will undertake one or more training
sessions in which all surface personnel and appropriate underground
personnel will be briefed on site specific compliance requirements
established in either the permit or the applicable regulations. In
addition, the training session will deal with how to identify and
respond to potential circumstances of non-compliance.
We are confident that these steps will address the concerns
you raised in our recent meeting and will result in an improvement
in the overall compliance record for the facility. We genuinely
appreciate the constructive approach you and your staff reflected
in our recent meetings and look forward to working with you in the
future. If you or your staff have any questions or further
concerns regarding the issues discussed above or other matters
related to the Somerset Mine, please contact me at your earliest
convenience. Thank you.
Verp Truly Yours,
Walter L. Wright
Mine Manager
Somerset Mining Company
