SHEPHERD MILLER, INC.
Environmental and Engineering Consultants
TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 25, 2000
TO: Battle Mountain Resources
FROM: Jim B. Finley
RECEIVED
r "~
J;No~ h,Ji
Division of Minerals ~ ~=0109y
SUBJECT: Summary Report
INTRODUCTION
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. (BMRI) has been actively managing seepage fron the West Pit
since October, 1998. In addition, the water management plan developed in TR-26 has been
implemented generally according to schedule. The water management techniques ~:mployed since
the submission of TR-26 to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) on March 22,
1999 have begun the process of modifying the hydrology in the vicinity of [he Vlest Pit as was
projected in TR-26. As a consequence, groundwater levels, seepage flows (along the Rito Seco),
and surface water quality have changed. This technical memorandum provides a summary of the
changes that have occurred at the site since July, 1999. In addition, the water qualit~~ data that have
been gathered since July, 1999 aze contained in electronic format on the enclosed 3.5 inch computer
disks.
The overall changes in groundwater levels and water quality aze a result of the iml~lemen[ation of
the water management plan. Table 1 summarizes the timing of events at the San Luis Project since
March 1999, and these dates are noted on the accompanying figures that aze referenced latter in this
letter. None of the events listed in Table 1 alone produce the changes in the overall hydrologic and
geochemical system discussed in this letter, rather the sum total of the events combine to yield the
changes. Figure 1 shows the locations of sampling sites referenced in [his letter.
3801 Automation Way, Suite 100, Fort Collins, Colorado 80525
Telephone (970) 223-9600 /FAX (970) 223-7171
