stockpiling will take place on the existing pit bottom, which is 40-80 feet lower than the
surrounding terrain, thus maintaining the low visibility and noise of these existing activities
TopsoiUOverburden Handling
As of the start of 2007, all topsoil and overburden has been stripped from the mining azea on the
existing flat terrace. This area is approximately 47 acres. Subsoil in this area was thin and was
combined with the topsoil. The berm around the east and north sides of the existing pit contains
this topsoilsubsoil. The average height is 10 feet, with 2H:1 V sideslopes and 20' wide at the top.
The length of the pile is 4650 feet long. Therefore, the volume of the stockpile is approximately
68,000 cubic yards and utilizes approximately 6.4 acres. The mining azea which was stripped is
approximately 45.4 acres.
Topsoil was also stripped from the employee housing area and placed in a berm around the azea
itself. This area of 2.8 acres disturbance produced a volume of topsoiVsubsoil of approximately
7000 cubic yards.
Given a total stockpile volume of 68,000 cy + 7,000 cy = 75,000 cy, and a total strip area of 2.8
acres + 45.4 acres = 48.2 acres, the average strip depth was 0.96 feet
In the expansion area, the natural slopes have only 6" to 1' of topsoil. The flatter top of the hill
has up to 14' of overburden below the 1' of topsoil, but this area is relatively small:
approximately 1.3 acres. The slope azea to be mined is approximately 14.7 acres. Based on these
figures, the amount of topsoil and overburden to be recovered in the expansion area is
Flat area overburden: 1.3 acres x 14' depth = 29,360 cy
Slope area and flat area topsoil: 16.0 acres x 1' depth = 25,813 cy
The overburden will be placed in the old areas of the pit, similaz to the imported material. This
material has historically been placed on the north side of the pit.
Prior to any mining taking place in the expansion azea, two topsoil berms will be created in order
to create a visual and audio screen in areas of special concern. The first berm will be built along
Vagneur Pit June 07 D-3
