5.3 Climax Mine Tailing and Industrial Water System
• 5.3.1 Tailing and Industrial Water System in the Ten Mile Drainage
5.3.1.1 Tailing Delivery House (TDH) and East Tailing Delivery Line (ETDL)
During shutdown status, the TDH and ETDL are not in use for tailings delivery. As a
result, no work is cuttently planned in this area. If the ETDL were to rupture tailing fluids would
report to the process water system by overland flow.
Description; Main tailing delivery system from the Climax mill to the tailing ponds. Consists
of a concrete 42-inch diameter pipeline approximately five (5) miles long.
Location: ETDL extends from the mill through the TDH to the Robinson, Ten Mile, and
Mayflower tailing ponds. See Figure 1.
Spill Potenfial: High.
Potential Volume Spilled: Because the lines are checked regularly, spills aze likely to be less
than a few thousand gallons, unless the leak occurs beneath snow.
• Prevention and Control: Any spill from a ruptured line or in the TDH would be totally
contained in the tailing system drainage, and would have very little chance to by-pass the
treatment system.
Countermeasures: In the event of line rupture, tailing delivery will be shut down, the line
repaued, and spilled tailing will be cleaned up by use of mine equipment.
Location of Nearest Clean-up Equipment: Endloaders and trucks aze available throughout the
minesite; additional equipment (shovels, tailing line repair supplies, etc.) aze available in the
warehouse.
Visual Inspections and Integrity Testing: Visual checking occurs daily during operation of the
mill. During idle periods, the system is visually checked at least weekly.
Reporting: In the event that waters of the State of Colorado aze threatened by a spill from the
tailing delivery system, the notification procedure outlined in Sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4 will
apply. Any spill from the tailing delivery system should be documented on the "Spill and
Release Information Sheet" immediately (Appendix I), and given to the Environmental
Department.
Conformance with Applicable Requirements: At the time of this writing (May 2004) the
• ETDL is in conformance with applicable regulatory requirements.
47
