5.2.2 PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) Storage Areas
• A PCB Management Program is defined in the May 1995 booklet entitled "Mine Emergency
Plan." This PCB Management Program covers the following PCB related issues; control,
documentation, training, spill control, clean-up procedures, and fires involving PCB equipment.
For purposes of the present SPCC/MCP Plan, pertinent sections of the above-mentioned PCB
Management Program have been extracted and outlined in the sections below.
Prior to 1997, Climax Mine uses PCB oil as an insulating and cooling medium in transformers
and capacitors. The Climax Mine Electrical Department is responsible for management of PCBs
onsite. Pending any unforeseen identification of PCB-containing equipment onsite, Climax
Mine has eliminated all PCB equipment as of January 1, 1998. Due to the fact that it is
possible to discover a piece of electrical gear containing PCBs, this SPCC/MCP addresses
how to handle such an occurrence.
~ •
40
