5.2.1.7 Surtac Gear Lube Storage in Mill
• Description: Sumac is a highly viscous petroleum grease product used to lubricate mill
machinery in the No. 3 MIlI.
Location: Various pallets in mill building.
Spill Potential: Very Low.
Potential Volume Spilled: One or two drums is the most likely amount spilled.
Countermeasures: Because Surtac is a highly viscous product, spills aze not likely to migrate
from the point of leakage. Therefore, containment is best accomplished with floor dry and
scooping the spilled material into a clean drum. If the spilled Surtac flows away from the leaky
drum, then sorbent booms or pillows may be required for containment.
Nearest C-ean-up Equipment: Spill kits aze located in the east and west ends of the mill
building..
Visual Inspections and Integrity Testing: During mill operation Surtac storage is checked
daily; when shut down the Sumac storage is checked weekly.
Reporting: Ruptured drums resulting in the spillage of more than half a drum should be
documented on a "Spill Incident Report" form immediately (Appendix 1), and given to the
Environmental Department.
Conformance with Applicable Requirements: At the time of this writing (May 2004) the
Sumac Storage facilities in the mil] are in conformance with applicable regulatory requirements.
•
33
