5.2 Storage Facilities

•
l J
5.2.1 Petroleum Products Storage
Climax Mine utilizes a wide variety of petroleum products ranging from unleaded gasoline to
heat transfer fluids. Not only does petroleum product usage vary widely, but also responsibility
for spill prevention and control varies from Climax Mine personnel to contractors working
onsite. Sections 5.2.l.lthrough 5.2.1.11 and 5.2.13 pertain to Climax Mine controlled activities.
In general, Climax management requires any contracting company working onsite to have a
sepazate SPCC plan. See section 5.2.1.12 for Pazker Ag's (onsite Contractor) oil inventory.
Responsibility for compliance with the individual SPCC plan rests with the contractor;
nevertheless, Climax resources for prevention and clean-up are available in the event of a serious
spill.
5.2.1.1(a) Open Pit Truck Shop Fuel and Oil Storage (Outside)
East of the Open Pit Truck Shop there are seven aboveground tanks (AST's) as follows:
Product Tune
Diesel Fuel
I S W40 Oil
lOW Oil
Diesel Fuel
80-90 W Gear Oil
Antifreeze
Stoddard Solvent
Used Oil
Total =
Size Material Containment
6,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, North Section
6,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, North Section
6,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, North Section
S00 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, North Section
6,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, South Section
6,800 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, South Section
2,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, South Section
12,000 gal Steel Earthen berm w/Liner, South Section
45,350 gal
In addition to the tanks, there is a distribution building housing the pumps and pipelines which
allows tankloads of oil to be off-loaded directly into the various storage tanks. Similarly, there is
an underground pipe-filled corridor connecting the Open Pit Shop and the distribution building.
Diesel fuel is dispensed from the new 500 gallon tank by means of a conventional metal nozzle
with automatic shut off capabilities and the connecting hose can be placed inside the containment
berm when not in use.
Chemicals and Description: Petroleum products as given in table above.
Location: East of Open Pit Truck Shop.
Spill Potential: Low.
24
