/~
Mr. Dan Bear
March 25, 1998
Page 2
/~~/~,\ -
r
5) Please provide a description of the faults shown on the mine progress map submi«ed with the Bear Mine
1996 Annual Hydrology Report. Did these faults exhibit any offset. Were these fault areas moist or did
they produce any water inflow?
6) Did Bear personnel observe any water inflows or areas of the mine with elevated temperatures?
7) Please provide a detailed description of the manner in which water was handled in the Bear No. 3 Mine.
Where were water accumulations collected and/or stored. Describe any sump volumes and locations.
8) Describe any pipe installations which occurred to handle mine inflows. Did all inflows gravity flow to
sumps, pipes or discharge locations? During operations, did all mine inflows collect in sumps, or did
some of the water flow to down gradient locations in the mine beyond any possible collection point?
Include descriptions of the mechanisms by which water was routed to the NPDES discharge point, and
for use in the mine. Include details regarding pump locations, pumping rates and pumping duration.
Provide as much detail as possible.
9) The December 19, 1997 letter from Dan Bear (response number 29), references a meeting with Mr. Phil
Schmidt. The last sentence of response number 29 in the above-referenced letter states "At the time Bear
did not know MCC was planning to convert the area above the Bear No. 3 Mine into a huge sump". You
have since indicated that during some meeting, Mr. Schmidt informed you that fault inflow waters would
be pumped to the NW panels above the Bear Mine.
Please describe, in detail, any and all meetings with MCC personnel regarding mine water storage and
water inflows, including dates of meetings and your recollection of any information exchanged.
Your response to this letter as soon as possible will be appreciated.
S}'~ei
L_-'~
f
~id.Berry
S nor Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Susan McCannon, DMG
Mike Boulay, DMG
Steve Brown, Attorney General Office
M:V ISSVRCb.WLETiR.DnB
