- - • • iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
.~~~, STATE OF COLOI~9v
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlrsctor
DATE: June 30, 1989
T0: Tony Waldron
FROM: Berhan Keffelew
RE: Mid-Term Review of the Hayden Gulch Mine
File No. C-81-003
As you requested I have reviewed the categories indicated on the Mid-Term
Review. Listed are some comments I have on the individual topics.
2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
The general description part of both hydrology and geology is very limited.
However, there is a detailed account of each topic separately in 2.04.5 and
2.04.7. All the required maps are provided per Rule 2.10 and appear to be
adequate.
2.04.7 Surface Water Information
All the water quality data appear to be provided. The USGS gaging facility is
being used to establish the minimum, maximum and mean flows and the seasonal
variation for the Yampa and Williams Fork Rivers. It appears all the
questions raised about the water monitoring reports for the surface water in
accordance with 2.05.6 have been resolved. The operator has been supplying
the Division with semi-annual reports of the surface water quality. Also
stated are the seasonal variation of surface water quality and the impact the
mine has on the condition. The 1988 Annual Reclamation Report on hydrologic
monitoring on surface water had four sites.
1. Upper and Lower Hayden Gulch
2. Upper and Lower Dry Creek
The report was revised to include semi-annual monitoring during high flows in
spring and low flows in early fall. Both the lower monitoring wells still
show significant increases in TDS values due to increases in bicarbonate,
sodium and sulfates. The total quality of these surface waters is very poor
for all monitoring sites.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 866.3567
