1
ore will be hauled from the site daily: however, this season
only about 75 to 1~)C~ tons were trucV:ed daily. Assuming a haul
capacity of 26 to 2B tons per truck, approiimately seven to
' eight round trips per day will be needed to move 24~) tons from
the Idaho Mill.
' The ore from waste rock dumps contains sufficient moisture to
be screened and crushed without causing fugitive dust problems
at the mine and crusher sites. The ore being transported to
the cyanide leaching_ facility may have to be covered to
' prevent losses of the finer materials. This is a primary
concern to the operator since the fines contain the higher
grade deposits. To date such precautions have not been
' required.
From the Idaho Mill site, the over-the-highway haul trucks use
er,isting State and County roads to move the ore to the cyanide
heap leach mill, eight miles northwest of La Garita. on the
west flan4~ of the San Luis Valley. Hauling from the mine is
limited seasonally due to the large accumulations of snow
common to southwestern facing slopes of the La F'lata kange.
Hauling occurs from Mav to late October. Most of the high
grade material will be removed during summer and fall of 1987
and 1988. In 1986 mining activities were limited to
additional e::ploration, permit acquisition, and negotiating
mining, hauling, and leaching contracts.
In order to accommodate the number of haul trips per day. the
access road required some improvement. Far the most part the
roadway is in good condition; however, grading and ballasting
are needed to maintain its condition. Grade and route chances
are not e::pected at this time, even though, bac4:ing is
necessary to negotiate some of the switchbacks. All
' maintenance is done according to methods prescribed by the
U.S. Forest Service. Since the roadway beyond the
applicant's patented claim boundaries is out of his direct
' control, most of the access route is not included within the
permit disturbed area.
As the pit develops and benching moves deeper into the face
' and higher up the slope of Ohwiler kidge, it may be necessary
to reroute the site access road. Arrangements will be made
with owners of ad_;acent lands to see if temporary closure of
' the road would be appropriate. If not. then, it will be
rerouted above the present cut until the open pit surface
pperation has been completed. Since the road is er:tremely
' steep at the mine site. the Applicant is considering
incorporating a new road bed configuration within the final
reclamation plan.
' This access road is used to some degree by the general public
LJ
