Peter Paage
NCC Pit #1 Extension Site -Mouse Disqualification Request
Page 2
~._.
Vegetation along the banks of Little Dry Creek within the southwest corner of the site is a
cattail wetland. Dense stands of cattails have very low potential to be Preble's habitat.
Vegetation along Little Dry Creek north of the cattail wetland consists of a monoculture of
reed canarygrass (Phalaris arutrdinacea) with scattered plains cottonwood (Populus
deltoides) and Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) trees. Mostly rudural species are
located upland of the creek banks. The corridor along Little Dry Creek does not include
"well-developed plains riparian vegetation with relatively undisturbed grassland and a water
source in close proximity" or "dense herbaceous vegetation consisting of a variety of gasses,
fortis and thick shrubs" that are considered to be typical Preble's habitat according to the
USFWS 2004 Guidelines. (see attached photo of Little Dry Creek)
Seven sites along the South Platte River east of the site were trapped for Preble's. All seven
sites along the river were trapped and Preble's were not found. A Preble's clearance from
the USFWS was conferred on June 9, 1999, for the NCC Pit #I site that is located
immediately south of the proposed NCC Pit #1 Extension site. (1999 USFWS Clearance is
attached)
For the above reasons we request a concurrence for disqualification of this site for further
consideration as Preble's habitat and exclude the site from the trapping requirements. If you
. _ have any questions, or we can provide additional supporting information regazding this
concurrence request for disqualification for the Zapus hudsonius preblei on the NCC Pit #1
Extension site, please contact us.
Sincerely,
Edith Savage
Principal
c: John Zadel, Northern Colorado Constructors, Inc.
Attachments: General Location Map
Photo of Little Dry Creek
1999 USFWS Clearance of NCC Pit #1 Site
ss
