CG
February 12, 2004
Mr. Brad Janes
Varna Companies, Inc.
S I20 Gage Street
Frederick, Colorado 80516
Re: Soil Remediation Report and Treatment Plan
Varna Companies, Inc.
Durham Pit 117
]431 E. 16`h Street
Greeley, Colorado
DMG Mine ID: M-1978-056
CGRS Project #: 1-135-9929ab
Deaz Mr. Janes:
ENVIRONMENTAL • CONSTRUCTION • COMPLIANCE
~'-J ~ d!
As requested by the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG), CGRS, Inc. (CGRS) has prepared
this report documenting corrective actions taken by Varna Companies, Inc, (Vazra) to address diesel fuel
impacted soil at the former fuel depot located in the central azea of the referenced site (Figure 1). The fuel
depot location is in the Southeast '/o of the Northeast '/s of the Northwest Y< of Section 10, Township 5 North,
Range 65 West of the 6"' Prime Meridian in Weld County, Colorado. During an inspection conducted by the
DMG on November 11, 2003 it was noted that piping associated with the diesel fuel aboveground storage tank
(AST) at the fuel depot had a slight leak. Discolored, contaminated soil was observed inside the AST
secondary containment azea. Based on these observations, DMG requested that the extent of contamination be
defined, verify whether groundwater has been affected, and provide a plan for proper disposal of the
contaminated soil. It was also requested that details be provided on how leaks will be prevented and
contaminated soil handled in the future.
Following the DMG inspection, Varna took measures to repay the pipe leak and removed diesel fuel from the
AST to a level below the fuel transfer pipe. On January 19, 2004 an estimated 100-gallons of residua! file] was
pumped from the tank and the AST was removed from the fuel depot. The empty AST was placed in the bone
yard~terage-,area-in-tho--seutheastarea-of--thc-site-and--is-not^seruice. -VisualinspecIiora-of.the-AST
following removal revealed no appazent evidence of leakage from the tank. On January 19 and 20, 2004,
Varna performed excavation activities to remove the impacted soil and to determine the extent of hydrocazbon
contamination.
Current fueling activities aze perfomred at the fueling station located in the southeast azea of the site. ASTs
now used for fueling aze located in a secondary containment system of concrete construction designed to
contain potential future leaks or spills and prevent impact to the environment.
Soil Remediation
Soil remediation and environmental assessment objectives on the project were based on the Colorado
Department of Labor and Employment, Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS), Petroleum Storage Tank
Owner/Operator Guidance Document, February 1999 (Guidance Document). Between January 19 and 2Q
2004, excavation was conducted to remove the petroleum hydrocazbon impacted soil from the fuel depot azea.
P.O.
