Walther
Executive Director
Michael B. Long
Division Director
The Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) conducted an inspection on September 20, 2001st
the 83rd Joint Venture Pit, located in Weld County at 4509 F Street, Greeley, Colorado in
response to a report from Colorado Division of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE) [hat
a diesel fuel leak had occurred on the site sometime between mid-March and the end of April of
2001. Additional information concerning remediation was presented to the DMG in the form of a
report, Soil and Groundwater Abatement Renort Aeere~ate Industries F Street Facility, 4509 F
Street. Greeley, Colorado, composed by the Paragon Consulting Group, and documenting the
remediation work completed at the site as of July 6, 2001.
The Paragon Report indicated that soil samples collected during abatement excavation indicated
detectable levels of BTEX and TEPH along some of the excavation boundaries. The boundaries
of the abatement excavation were set according to recommendations made by the Paragon Group.
It is anticipated that during subsequent extraction activities, all of the remaining contaminated soil
will be excavated.
Despite the abatement activities that have already been accomplished by Aggregate industries,
[here is still concern that contaminants may be migrating from the release location. The goals of
the DMG involving the situation at the 83`d Joint Venture Pit are:
to ensure that no contaminated groundwater is ultimately discharged into the nearby Poudre
River,
• to ensure that no contaminated groundwater migrates off the site,
• and to make certain that adequate practices aze incorporated to assure that a similar incident
does not occur.
r~-r_n -rr_ _~t COLOI~DO
~~~ IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII L~
In order to achieve these goals, the DMG is requiring Aggregate Industries to submit a technical
revision to permit M-1992-069 by October 31, 2001.
