SHELTON, Dlreotor
October 15, 1987
Mr. Bradford Janes
Gambit, Inc.
1510 York Street
Suite 329
Denver, Colorado 80206
Re: Amendment Adequacy Review, Sterling Companies, Home Office Mine,
File No. M-77-439
Dear Mr. Janes:
The Division has reviewed the permit amendment request submitted by Sterling
Companies on July 31, 1987. The amendment would consolidate four (4) existing
permits into one permit known as the Hame Office Mine. As part of the
amendment, certain areas would be added to those previously permitted, other
areas would be excluded, and specific aspects of the mining and reclamation
plan would be changed. The Division has found the rewritten document and many
of the proposed changes to be significant improvements on the existing
permits. The thoughtful attention to all aspects of the mining and
reclamation plan are evident upon review of the amendment proposal. Your
response to the following questions and comments is requested prior to Board
consideration of the proposal on October 22, 1987.
Mine Plan
1. On page D-4 it is stated that the Area 1 pond is gradually being
backfilled. What is the general plan and timetable for completion of the
backfilling of the Area 1 pond?
Water Resources
2. A large canal to the east of Area 2 is shown on all of the maps but is
not identified. Also, a lake is shown to lie outside of ~,e permit area
between areas D and F. What are the names of these features? for
clarity, these should be identified on future map submittals.
3. The amendment describes the previous problem with flooding in 1983,
delineates the flood plain on Exhibit C-7, and discusses the use of riprap
and the use of 100 foot buffers between river and excavation areas. Also
mentioned in page D-4 is that areas exist where river erosi~~n has
contributed to buffers narrower than 100 feet. The Division would like
to suggest that Sterling Companies consider the following measures for
use in the future:
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
