~~ ~ SANBORN SAND & GRAVEL, INC.
P.O. Box 362
Fairplay, CO 80440
719.836.2406
Weal Atkinson
Anneke K. Raney
2695 Wyandotte Ave.
San Diego, Ca. 92117
RE: Letter to Div. of Minerals S Geology concerning 112 Permit
application for expansion.
The Division forwarded a copy of your letter to them expressing
your concerns about our application. I will try to address each
cf your points. -
1) We feel we have helped many peaple in this area by providing
sand, gravel, road base, septic rock, and boulders used as
decorative rock many people feel enhance their property. We
are the only steady, permanent providers of these products in
this area, and the next closest market would mean more expensive
trucking bills. (Breckenridge)
Some of the people in Fairplay who use our product are The Town
of Fairplay, 4-H, day care providers, Forestry Service, State of
Colorado, numerous contractors, individuals, and I believe the
Fairplay community appreciates both the convenience and honesty
of our business. Econmmically Fairplay is a fragile community,
and it is very hard for business to survive here. I feel our
business helps support many other Fairplay businesses.
2) The State Engineer's office received a copy of our application,
and pointed out we do not intercept groundwater. Our water is
piped from a surface diversion structure, and they also stated
that it recommends approval of current operation.
3) We are not actually expanding our current operation, however we do
need more storage area for our stockpiles. We have been fortunate
to provide the sand for highway 9 winter maintenance, and this
requires more space. We are not expanding our ponds in any way,
and I have never noticed any addition or subtraction of mosquitos.
There is a subdivision water augmentation pond next to our
property also; could this be adding to the mosquito population?
Since we are not charming the current plan I would not expect any
change in the current conditions.
In answer to any ground water question, I would repeat we do not
use nor affect any ground water.
<1) Again, storage is our goal, and there will be no' change in the
current traffic, noise or dust. This has been an extremely dry
year and I believe the motorists on the County road create as
much dust as we do. I can see no reason for the current condition
to change, since we are not expanding oug excavating.
