There is a small irrigated azea which is interspersed with wetland species. The applicant does not
believe this small azea is jurisdictional wetland due to the influence of irrigation water. The
following letter from the Corps of Engineer confirms that the wetland is not jurisdictional.
Weed Control Plan
This weed control plan has been recommended to the applicant by Sheila Grother, San Miquel
Basin Weed Program Manager.
Inventory of San Miguel Basin Listed Noxious Weeds
Russian Knapweed
White Top
Tamarisk
Biennial Thistles
The entire permit area will be surveyed to determine the presence and location on the site of any
of the listed weeds well before disturbance of the site.
Treat the azea proposed as initial disturbance with an appropriate herbicide for white top, thistle
and knapweed in order to reduce the amount of viable seed stored within the soil.
The stored soil generated by the initial disturbance will be planted to a cover crop as soon as
possible after removal to protect it from noxious weeds and wind erosion.
Treat azeas designated as haul routes within the planned mine area to prevent the spread of
noxious weeds by equipment and continuing disturbance.
From the beginning of the operation through the life of the operation, weed control will be
initiated well ahead of scheduled disturbance in order to allow sufficient time for existing seed to
germinate and control measures to be successful. Two yeazs ahead of disturbance is
recommended.
Observe stored soil for the occurrence of noxious weeds and treat all new noxious weed
populations found on stored soil as soon as possible.
J-2
