6.4.8 Exhibit H -Wildlife Information
Wildlife Assessment -Long Resource
Site Description
Savage and Savage conducted a wildlife assessment for Hall-Irwin Corporation's Long
Resource on May 7, 2007. The site contains approximately 118.5 acres located within a
portion of the EYz of Section 25 in Township 6 North, Range 67 West of the 6ei Prime
Meridian, Wald County, Colorado. The property is bounded on the north by Weld
County Road 64.75, east by a fence line, south by a fence line, and west by an
unimproved access road.
The weather during the site investigation was mild and breezy with temperatures in the
70's. Elevation of the site ranges from 4715 to 4750 feet and the property slopes gently
southeast towards the Cache la Poudre River. The current channel of the Cache la Poudre
River flows approximately 1,000 feet south of the site, the primary alluvial terrace of the
river crosses the south boundary of the proposed mineral extraction site.
According to the Soil Survey of Weld County, Southern Part (1980), five soil map units
are found within the Long Resource site. Four soil types aze located within the north and
central portions of the site and include Kim loam (1 to 3 percent slopes), Olney find
sandy loam (0 to 1 percent slopes), Otero sandy loam (1 to 3% slopes), and Otero sandy
loam (3 to 5 percent slopes). Aquolls and Aquent (gravelly substratum) soils aze located
within the primary alluvial terrace at the southern boundary of the project site.
The secondary terrace is used for agriculture and had been plowed during our site
investigation. Vegetation communities of the primary terrace were divided into relatively
distinct mesic and hydrophytic associations. Mesic species included dandelion, mustards,
clover, musk thistle, mallow, and western wheatgrass. Hydrophytic species included
Baltic msh, spike msh, Nebraska sedge, water sedge, saltgrass, buttercup, clover, curly
dock, dandelion, rabbitfootgrass, orchazdgrass, and tole (in standing water). There are
jurisdictional wetlands on the Long Resource site located within the primary terrace of
the Cache la Poudre River.
Significant t~ldlife Resources
Tables 1, 2, and 3 list wildlife species that potentially occur on-site according to the
Colorado Distribution Latilong Studies (CDOW, 1981, 1990, 1998). The latIlong studies
encompass mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
During our site investigation we encountered a number of avian species. Species
included ared-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), Canada geese (Branta canadensis),
mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), avocets (Recurvirostra americana), a westem kingbird
(Tyrannus verticalis), western meadowlazks (Sturnella neglecta), homed lazks
