PHILLIPS MINING, GEOTECHNICAL 8 GROUTING, INC.
construction area in a 3 inch diameter stainless steel pipe. This pipe should be fitted with a
coarse mesh on its inlet end, to avoid plugging it, and have two stainless steel seal rings
attached around the outside. These rings, 1/4 inch thick, must be fully welded around the
complete perimeter of the pipe, and be located some 2 ft and 4 ft from the wet end of the
plug. The rings should form a solid collar extending about 4 inches outside the exterior
surface of the pipe, and as such, will be well embedded in concrete and so will prevent any
leakage along the outside of the pipe.
After the completion of the plug, this water drainage pipe will be used to monitor the
build-up of pressure on the plug. The necessary fittings, including a 0 to 25 psi. pressure
gauge and valves, must be supplied to allow this to be accomplished. However, when
pressure monitoring is no longer necessary, this pipe will be plugged with anon-shrink
grout. Provision should be made in the placement and/or in the configuration of the pipe
such that successful plugging of this pipe can be performed.
Complete filling of the drift around the timber cribbing and sets will be difficult to achieve
during concrete placement. Subsequent grouting azound the plug will be used to complete
the filling of the adit. However, the installation of standpipes through the timber at the
optimum orientation around the plug to direct grout into the open zones, can only be
achieved in a relatively short plug. Therefore it is intended that the plug should be
constructed in two monolithic concrete pours, each approximately 12 feet long, over the
complete drift cross section.
If for some unavoidable reason, either concrete pour cannot be completed without a stop
such that there is a possibility of forming a horizontal concrete cold joint, the top surface
of the fresh concrete must be treated with a chemical surface retarder. This retarder must
be compatible with the aggregate size and which will etch deeply into the concrete, such
as Fosroc Preto EAC-S-Deep, or equivalent. This will delay the set of the cement paste
Page 4
