6 Jun 1996
~i= ~~~

Mr Jeny Koblitz
Grrystone
5990 Greenwood Plain Blvd, Ste. 104
Englewood, CO 80111
` Enclosed find a copy of the negative cultural resource inventory report for three proposed
:':exploratory drill holes, two ventilation shaft locations, and associated access improvements for
~- the West Elk Mine, Gunnison County, Colorado. One collapsed log building associated with the
~~Gallob Mine (SGN3~ was found within the edge of the survry corridor for the access upgrade
:,, to the ventilation shaft location. However, this collapsed building is upslope and outside the area
'.: of impact of the road upgrade. No other cultural resources were found in these project areas.
~. ~ Because the proposed undertakings will not adversely impact any significant cultural properties,
:cultural resourcq clearance is recommended for the areas as flagged and staked at the time of
`''survry. In addition, the access corridor for drill site FF is on extremely steep and unstable slopes
~:. (greater than 60%). If some modification of this corridor is necessary, it is extremely unlikely
that any in situ cultural resources would be present on the adjacent steep slopes, and additional
survey would not be needed to recommtnd clearance for this area. Copies of this report have
been forwarded to Mountain Coal Company's West Elk Mme and to the USFS Collbtan Ranger
District
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.
~azl Spath, Ph.D.
Senior Staff Archaeologist
-Kathy Welt, Mountain Coa!
