LKhheM
EaKUlly! OirKiw
Michael B. long
~IV ISIOn pnKrOr
I am pleased to report that our weed control grant application was recently approved by the
Colorado Department of Agriculture. As you may recall, Minerals and Geology submitted the
application in partnership with Pitkin:County, the Forest Service, the Oftice of Surface Mining
and with the Aspen Wilderness Workshop. Each partner committed funding in either cash and/or
services. Through the grant, the Department of agriculture .is providing $4,500 in cash.
Minerals and Geology will be contracting the weed control work through the State competitive
bid process. In order to do this, cash contributions will need to be deposited in a weed control
account which we will establish with the State Treasurer. We will contact all partners in the very
near future to agree upon the most efficient way of transferring funds to this account.
Generally, our plan for 1998 is to initiate field delineation of the project (infested) area as soon as
snow melt allows. This will include mapping of the project area, and establishment of permanent
reference areas, which will be used to measure the success of the treatment program.
Concurrent with the field work, we will develop the necessary bid documents, and invite
contractors to provide bids to complete the weed control work contemplated for 1998. I
anticipate that the actual weed control work will be accomplished in late spring or early summer.
During the summer, the treated areas will be visually monitored. Statistically valid sampling of
the reference areas will occur in the late summer in order to measure success, and to help in
planning for additional work in 1999. We will. also.be involved in educational outreach activities
throughout the year, in an effort to increase public awareness of weed control issues and of
reclamation sciences.
