Page 2.05 -109, second to last pazagraph on Dove Cave: Please add a statement similar
to, "If after a two yeaz period, the support timbers appeaz to be taking on load, thereby
providing the primary support for the overhang, Bowie will consult with the USFS in
order to determine future action and long term support. In addition, if the timber supports
do not appear to be functioning properly, Bowie will contact USFS representatives
immediately to determine necessary steps to minimize resource damage."
During our February 13, 2007, meeting with Bowie, the State Engineer's Office, and DRMS
several ideas were discussed with respect to the Bruce Pazk Dam and adjacent landslide feature.
We wanted to make sure several items were brought forwazd and included within the permit
revision:
• Attenuation information collected from the West Elk Mine's direct impact of their
seismometer should be analyzed and incorporated into Bowie's seisrnic modeling.
It is our wish that once mining occurs in close proximity to station FGH, Bowie collects
data relative to size of event recorded and distance from the event, and subsequently
analyzes the data and summarizes the results in an addendum to their mine permit. These
data should be compared to the information from the West Elk Mine, and any changes in
the model related to the Bruce Pazk Dam and landslide should be outlined.
• Through PR-10, a threshold acceleration (e.g. alarm limit) should be set on seismic
activity at the Bowie #2 mine. If and when this threshold is exceeded, it should initiate a
physical inspection of the Bruce Park Dam and reservoir. The USFS defers to the State
Engineer's office to determine an appropriate acceleration threshold.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to comment. If you have any questions, please contact
Ryan Taylor of my minerals staff at 970-527-4131, or via email at rztaylor(u,fs.fed.us .
Sincerely,
~, %~~~
LEVI K.
