- ~ • III IIIIIIIIIIIII III •
999 RECEIVED
NOV 0 4 1994
z
A
21710 Highway 550 South
Montrose , Colorado 81401 Division 01 Minerals 8 Geology
November 1, 1994
Mr. James Dillie, Environmental Protection Specialist
State of Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Dillie:
We object to the expansion of the Colons Pit operated by United
Companies of Grand Junction from the existing 27 acres that your
agency approved to the proposed 80 acres to the year 2014 for the
same reasons we opposed their initial permit application - 1.)
The serious, documented health issues of Dorothy E. Becker and
Emma A. Blanch, the Chuck Head family who reside at 22174 Highway
550, and the daughter of our renter who lives at 21704 Highway
550 (her allergies were so aggravated by the dust this summer
that for the first time she had to have shots). 2.) The impact on
wildlife habitat, domestic water and irrigation systems. 3.) The
financial repercussions for the people in this immediate vicinity
whose livelihood depends on tourism, the devaluation of
everyone's property in this section of the community and the
physical damage to buildings and their contents and vehicles from
constant exposure to noise, vibration and airborne dust and
asphalt emissions.
~ Written promises by United Companies to plant seed on the berme
to prevent erosion of topsoil and trees along their property
opposite our house to act as a buffer against noise and duet have
yet to be fulfilled.
Yea, occasionally, they do sprinkle their road with water, but
that does nothing for the airborne particles from conveyor belts
that eoar far above our house.
Foolishly, none of us had the foresight to record the pre-
hearinge that you conducted in Montrose since what was said in
front of my family, County Commissioner Cindy Bowen, a candidate
running for commissioner and a writer from the Montrose Daily
Preen is not the way things turned out.
No one from your office, at your own admission, has ever stepped
foot on this property and measured distances (remember telling us
that even the road had to be 200' away from existing
structures?). No one, to our knowledge, and with our permission,
from Western Colorado Testing, Inc. has come here or contacted
us, to quote your letter of June 3, 1994, "...that adequately
demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the Division, that the
mining operation will not adversely affect the man-made structure
(the Becker residence) that is within Z00 feet of the affected
land."
