~ '^~ Y
Mr. Joseph J. Dudash, DMG
July 25, 1996
Topsoil stockpiles selected to remain in place or be "orphaned" are presented on page 3 of Table 1.
Stockpile locations can be found on the Topsoil Stockpile Locations maps in the 1995 Annual Report
document (TR-70). All of these stockpiles are situated in the Ashmore and Hawken pit areas east of John-
son Gulch drainage. The selection of these stockpiles to be orphaned was based on: 1) the availability of
adequate topsoil quantities in nearby locations, and 2) the potential of the stockpiles to blend in with the
existing topography.
Of the surplus topsoil stockpiles selected to be orphaned, the entire volumes of three piles (A86-6, A92-4,
and A92-5) will remain in place while only a portion of two others (A91-8 and A92-1) will not be used.
Stockpiles A86-6 and A92-4 blend in very well with the existing topography and are very well vegetated.
It is therefore proposed that these stockpiles be left as they are in the post-mining landscape. Stockpile
A92-5 is situated at the edge of an agricultural field currently being farmed for alfalfa hay production. it is
proposed that the western portion of this pile be dozed to blend with and create additional cropland acreage
(refer to enclosed regrade plan). The remaining portions of stockpiles A91-8 and A92-1 can be easily
recontoured with dozers to blend in with existing topography following future removal of necessary topsoil.
This revised surplus topsoil plan should resolve the issue of "orphan" topsoil piles at Trapper Mine once
and for all. The plan identifies those topsoil stockpiles that are best situated to be incorporated into the
permanent post-mining landscape. The plan is also very conservative in that it allows fora 2-inch depth
buffer of topsoil th the Ashmore/1-Iawken pits area where topsoil stockpiles will be orphaned. Confusion
about surplus topsoil is also resolved in that all remaining topsoil inventory and replacement will now be in
balance.
As a final note, Trapper reserves the right to utilize topsoil from the stockpiles proposed for abandonment
with this proposed plan should future unforeseen conditions make this action necessary. DMG would be
notified and consulted prior to removing topsoil from these stockpiles.
Please wntact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding this wrrespondence.
Sincerely,
Forrest V.
