Ms Susan Burgmaier
October 28, 1994
Page 2
An assessment of the damage caused by the dozer was made on-site. The ground surface was
dry when the activity occurred, generally limiting disturbance to tracks and crushed graminoid
vegetation. Where slopes were crossed, some minor churning of the topsoil occurred. This
was not considered serious because of the dry soil conditions. Disturbance on vegetated slopes
was not considered serious enough to warrant reseeding or mulching. Probability of increased
flow and rill and gully genesis due to the tracks was estimated to be very low. The greatest
disturbance occurred where the dozer was turned azound, causing vegetation disturbance and
uprooting, and soil churning. Again, this occurred on flat surfaces which were well vegetated,
therefore the probability of erosion or vegetation failure is very low. Along the reclaimed
road along the southeast fenceline, the dozer scraped and disturbed some native oak and sage
plants along its path, which were cast into the reclaimed road. This was also estimated to be
minor disturbance.
Photographs were taken of areas of disturbance and are provided to the Division for
documentation purposes. Photograph numbers and directions are indicated on the sketch map.
This occurrence was discussed with Mr. Mike Long, Division Director, on October 27, 1994.
He was shown the map and photographs. He expressed the same degree of concern regarding
the level and seriousness of disturbance. Based on my discussion with Mr. Long, Sun Coal is
tracking the disturbance areas, and will conduct mulching and reseeding if any of the azeas
exhibit erosion.
If I can provide any additional information regazding this occurrence please contact me.
Sincerely:
~~~~~~
Michael S.
