In response to your letter of June 7, 1985, regarding your ouestions on
Cotter's Temporary Cessation Extension Request for its mining operations,
the following answers and explanations are submitted.
1. C-JD-7 U.C. (77-308) (110 permit - Limited Impact)
a. & b. The mine is still being dewatered on a daily basis into a two-
pond system with a treatment plant operation pursuant to Pollutant
Discharge Elemination System discharge permit CO-0036251. The old
evaporation pond area is being used as part of the new system.
c. No erosion has occurred as a result of the dewatering. The system
is totally controlled to the final discharge.
2. C-JD-7 Pit (79-94) (112 permit)
a. Please remove this mine from this extension of Temporarv Cessation
request. If it is not in operation by April, 1986, I will file a
request at that time.
b. To date, the spoil pile has not experienced any significant erosion.
3. C-SR-13A (77-311) (110 permit - Limited Impact)
a. Cribbing was installed in the area shown on the mine permitting
map.
b. Depending on the size of the dump when reclamation is started, it
may be best to remove the cribbing, and grade and contour the waste
material to stablize the bench area above. This proposed plan is
supported by the Department of Energy.
4. C-SM-18 (78-116) (112 permit)
a. The evaporation pond was constructed after mine development began
and the mine sump is pumped on an irregular basis (i.e., once a
month).
