2005 -2-
2.0 MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
053-2386
Three different soil materials and three geosynthetic materials were used to complete the testing
program consistent with the VLF construction. These materials aze described by their properties and
referred to by name for consistency during discussion of the test procedures.
2.1 Soil Materials
Three types of soil material were provided for testing and aze listed below:
1. Drain Cover Fill (DCF);
2. Low Volume Solution Collection (LVSC) Fill; and
3. Soil Liner Fill (SLF).
All of the soil materials for the liner load tests were collected by Golder and obtained from material
stockpiles produced as part of the 2003-2004 Phase N construction activities.
Prior to testing, the DCF and LVSC Fill materials were air dried then separated by grain size. The
grain size results aze included in Appendix A. The materials meet the gradation requirements for
DCF and LVSC Fill specified in the Phase N VLF Technical Specifications. The specified DCF and
LVSC Fil] gradations are summazized in Tables 2-1 and 2-2, respectively.
Preparation of the SLF material included air drying and separation by grain size. The soil was
screened over the 2-inch sieve to remove oversized material and processed by passing it through a
I No. 4 sieve. Soil clods between the No. 4 and 2-inch sieves were broken by hand and mixed with the
No. 4 material to simulate field soil prepazation conditions. The SLF material met the gradation
requirements specified in the Phase N VLF Technical Specifications, summarized in Table 2-3.
Prior to testing, the SLF was moisture treated and compacted according to the Phase IV VLF
Technical Specifications.
2.2 Geosynthetic Materials
Samples of textured 80-mil LLDPE and smooth 100-mil LLDPE geomembrane were supplied by
Polyflex for the liner load testing program. A sample of 80-mil textured VLDPE geomembrane was
i\OSQ3B6\0400\fvl-Iicnloedmpp0606\0532386.0400 fNrep.doc Golder Associates
