United Companies request that these larger topsoil and overburden
volumes be authorized for storage.
Re-disturbance of reclaimed areas at the Pit 1 Lake
Prior to the start of mining in the Amendment 1 area, reclamation at the
shore of the Pit l lake was performed as required in the Reclamation Plan.
Slopes both above and below the water line of the lake had been graded to
conform to the Reclamation Plan. Goose nesting boxes had been
constructed and installed in the shallow water area at the north side of the
lake. The underwater slope at the south side of the lake had been installed
according to the Plan. All of these items have bee affected by changed
activities at the site or lack of maintenance.
A. The goose nesting boxes that were previously installed in the Pit
lake were not maintained and were damaged by ice action and
inundated in the lake.
B. The slope at the south side of the lake was increased when the haul
road from the Black Pit to the DS&G Industrial area was widened in
this area. Additional fill was placed at the lake shore area to increase
road width to 30 feet. This road was widened to allow haul truck
traffic in both directions at the same time.
C. At the north shore of the Pit l lake the slope grades both above and
below the water line have been affected by the temporary
soil/overburden storage that is being done in areas adjacent to the
lake.
United Companies commits to reestablishing the features that have
been disturbed during the development and mining activities at the
Amendment 1 area. Mining at the Amendment l West Parcel will take
place at some time in the future. The Pit 1 lake will be drained at that
time to facilitate the mining activities. Reclamation activity for Items B
and C would be done along with the reclamation of the West Parcel
area.
United Companies requests that final reclamation grading for the Pit 1
areas mentioned above be delayed to occur concurrently with the
Amendment 1 West Parcel reclamation.
Problem 4: The topsoiUoverburden berm located on the south side of Amendment
parcel does not support an adequate vegetative cover.
United Companies has sampled the soil at this berm and had the soil analyzed by
Grand Junction Labs. The lab's report is attached. Upon receipt of the lab report, the
