Initially, most of the mining was by
underground methods; however, since the 1970s, there has been a conversion to surface
mining and "heap" leaching for mineral beneficiation. Permit M-80-244 was issued in
April 1981 and was initially for underground mining, milling, and tailing disposal.
Subsequent amendments have modified site activities with the more recent authorizing
the present operation of surface gold mining and the associated Cresson Valley Leach
• Facility ("VLF").
