<br />the most part, be limited to dry weather use. Additional steps to minimize sur- <br />face disturbance will include burying, or removing from the site, all garbage and <br />foreign debris. <br />Surface and sub-surface waters will be protected from contamination and the <br />intermingling of water from different aquifers will be prevented. Also, unless <br />required for monitoring or as a water supply, artesian flow will be prevented by <br />appropriate sealing of the hole. Where necessary, small diversions will be used <br />to divert surface runoff around and away from the immediate drill site. Runoff <br />from the drill sites will be very small because of the small area involved and <br />will not be passed through a sedimentation dam unless it occurs in a drainage <br />where a sedimentation dam has already been constructed. Any water generated by <br />the drilling operation, i.e. when drilling with water, will be contained in small <br />pits and covered with at least two feet of material or allowed to evaporate. <br />Drill holes located in areas where mining is not imminent (will not be mined <br />within two years) will be plugged according to Figure 3.3.1. A steel rod or <br />wooden marker will be cemented in the collar or as close as practical for future <br />identification. These holes will be reclaimed as will any roads that are built <br />to provide access and are no longer required. This will include returning the <br />area to its approximate original contours, ripping or discing heavily compacted <br />areas, replacing topsoil, and seeding with appropriate seed mixes (refer to Sec- <br />tion 3.6.3.5). <br />In instances where a drill hole is located on cropland, a steel rod or wooden <br />marker will not be cemented into the drill hole collar. To reduce the effect on <br />farming practices, the hole will be cemented off approximately two to three feet <br />below the ground surface and the hole covered with previously removed topsoil <br />(see Figure 3.3-1a). Since all drill holes are accurately located for mine acti- <br />vity purposes, an above-ground marker is not required. In the event that the <br />hole needs to be relocated at a later date, survey coordinates are available. <br />The reclamation procedures as described earlier will be followed after the drill <br />hole has been sealed off. <br />Development drill holes located in areas where mining is imminent (will be mined <br />within two years), and that do not enter an aquifer below the lowest coal seam to <br />be mined, will not be sealed according to Figure 3.3-1. However, drill cutting <br />will be placed into the holes to seal the opening at the surface. This will pre- <br />vent injury to man and wildlife. The proximity of the open pit and its imminent <br />advancement through the area minimizes any possible benefit of sealing such drill <br />holes. <br />3-25 <br />REVISED MAY 1 '87 <br />
