December 23, /999 <br />APPENDIX C <br />Page C'- l <br />STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE <br />FOR GROUNDWATER AND SURFACE WATER SAMPLING <br />C.I INTRODUCTION <br />The purpose of this document is to define the standard operating procedure (SOP) for <br />collecting groundwater samples from wells at the American Soda, Yankee Gulch Sodium Lease. <br />This document describes equipment, field procedures, QA/QC, sample identification, labeling, <br />handling, and chain of custody procedures necessary to collect groundwater samples from wells and <br />piezometers. Also included is a listing of sample containers, preservatives, and holding times <br />applicable to samples collected using this SOP. <br />C.2 EQUIPMENT <br />Sample bottles and preservatives will be obtained from the analytical laboratory. Several <br />extra sample bottles will be obtained for use in the field or for QA/QC purposes. Distilled or de- <br />ionized water should be obtained from the laboratory or other source. <br />Equipment used during well evacuation may include: <br />Well keys <br />Electronic water level probe <br />Assorted tools (knife, screwdriver, etc.) <br />PVC and stainless steel bailers (bottom filling) <br />Submersible pump <br />Thermometer <br />pH meter (with automatic temperature compensation) <br />Specific conductivity meter <br />Plastic squeeze bottle filled with distilled metal-analyze-free water <br />Polyethylene or glass container (for field parameter measurements) <br />Chemical-free paper towels or Kimwipes <br />Calculator <br />Pieid notebook <br />Agapito Associates, Inc. <br />
