OFFICE OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
1100 10'$ STREET, GREELEY, COLORADO 80631 (970) 350-9780 FAX (970) 350-9800
December 16, 2003
RE: Varna Gravel Pit in the Poudre River Floodway
To Whom it May Concern:
This letter is written in objection to the berms/dikes that have been recently constructed, and
continue to be created along the south side of the Poudre River at the Varna gravel pit at
approximately Cherry Avenue. As shown on the enclosed map, this area lies within the 1982
FEMA Floodway and the 2003 Army Corps Poudre River floodway boundaries. The City of
Greeley is concerned because these structures are located in the floodway with two potential
damaging impacts to City property. The first is raising the flood level for property on the north
located in the City. The second is to push the floodway onto property within the City that is
currently out of the Poudre River Floodway. The potentially impacted property, currently in the
City has an ongoing business operation and could be severely impacted in a major flood event
as a result of water diversion and displacement created by this illegal development on the south
side of the river.
We request that this illegal activity immediately stop and all existing berms and dikes within
both the FEMA and the Army Corps Poudre River floodway be brought into compliance. Any
City related questions regarding this matter may be directed to Greg at 350-9782 or Steve at
350-9792.
Sincerely,
~~~~~
Greg Fl~bbe, AICP
Greeley Flood Plain Administrator
>`
Steve Bagley, Deputy City Engineer
Poudre River Flood Study Project Manager
xc: Weld County Planning
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
Anderson Salvage
Bliss Produce
Flood Plain File
S E R V I N G O U R C O M M U N I T Y I T' S A T R A D I T I O N
S: CD~Floodplein Adminishntion~BlissFloodLe¢er
~e promr'se (oPreserue andimproue /le 9ually oFlfe for .~i'reeley /~rou9~lime y, tour/eons andcos(effec/iue service.
