Dept. of P;aiural Resources
SUBJECT: SOIL BASELINE STUDY FOR STORM KING MINES, INC.
I recently spent a day at the site near New Castle, completing most of
the mapping of the proposed dump site. There are a few more places
that I need to check. Preliminary investigation showed a paucity of suit-
able topsoil, as most of the soils are either shallow to shale or skeletal
(over 35°,o rock fragments throughout their profiles). 1 did find some areas
with soils having less rock fragments. 1 will try to delineate those soils
as they will be the source of the best topsoil.
it will take approximately three more days in the field to complete the
survey and sampling. I also need to check with the SCS to determine
what the moisture and temperature regimes are and, subsequently, the
correct taxonomic classification of the soils. The. report preparation will
take about a week. This includes sample handling, report preparation, and
topsoil volumetric calculations. I may be a little conservative on the hours
for this task.
I spoke to Jim Herron, CIvILRD, concerning the necessity of sampling those
soils with over 35% rock fragments. H said if adequate topsoil was avail-
able from other soils, then sampling of the skeletal soils would not be
necessary. It might save Storm King some analysis costs by not sampling
those soils .
~~~
Richard
