The pumping system was connected to a
flow switch in the four inch mine water discharge line.
As noted above, on February 29, 1988 an additional pump
was installed with a maximum feed rate of 6.6
gallons/hour. This pump was also connected to a flow
switch and acted as a backup for increased mine water
discharges.
The Pond 003 flocculdnt feed system was fed by gravity
from a 55 gallon drum through a line regulated by a
hand valve at the hoist house. An operator was present
at all times checking the flocculant flow periodically.
This line fed directly into a six-inch mine water
discharge line prior to entering Pond 003. Although
there are no written records of the amount of
flocculant used, WFC's best estimate is a maximum of 30
gallons per day from the hoist house to the Pond 003
system.
The actual dosage amount for the Pond 002 and 003
systems was determined by recommendations of the
flocculant supplier and visual inspection of the pond
effluent. Over the time period in question, there are
no records regarding the total amount of flocculant
used.
4. Ponds 002 and 003 discharge flow volumes are calculated
from pump records recorded at the Golden Eagle Mine.
Hour meters have been installed on the pumps which
record operating time. Pump meter readings are
recorded periodically and the pumps are recalibrated as
necessary to determine the volume of water pumped.
Calibration is conducted at a pump surge tank located
underground. The tank is allowed to fill with mine
inflow water and removal of the known volume of water
is timed to determine pump capacity. WFC assumes that
all water pumped is discharged and no allowance is made
for seepage or evaporation from the discharge systems.
(Flow records are summarized on Tables 2 and 3).
5. Mine water was directed to Pond 003 from January 27,
1988 through March 4, 1988. Discharge from the pond
began on February 3, 1988. All flow and water quality
data is presented on Table 3.
6. Analytical results for samples collected from 'January 1
through March 31, 1988 are presented in Tables 1-11.
Sampling locations are shown on Figure 2.
7. At approximately 10:00 a.m. on March 8, 1988, Mike
Kolin, Manager of Engineering for WFC, informed me that
