1
• 1.0 OVERVIEW
American Soda, L. L. P. initiated the ground water monitoring program described
in this document in order to characterize the present baseline ground water
system at the Yankee Gulch Lease in preparation for commercial development
of the site. The Yankee Gulch Lease is located in the central Piceance Creek
Basin in Rio Blanco county, near Meeker, Colorado in the BLM's White River
Resource Area (Refer to Regional Setting Map Figure 1-1).
Structures present at the Yankee Gulch Sodium Minerals Project currently
consist of a Test Mine Facility operated since 1996, three nahcolite production
test solution mining wells, and two evaporation ponds. Five ground water
monitoring wells (20-5, 20-9, 20-1, 20-8, 21-2) and one underground injection
well (20-6) located near the Test Mine Facility are also actively monitored as
• part of the test phase compliance program. Well 20-8 is a water supply well for
the Test Mine Facility that is also monitored for water quality.
Monthly activities during July 1999 at the site included drilling, development, and
sampling of several additional ground water monitoring wells. Subsequent
activities through August, September, and October included the continued
monitoring and completion of all wells required to characterize the baseline
ground water quality. This document is limited to the presentation of the
baseline ground water monitoring data collected from July 1, 1999 through
October 31, 1999 at the Piceance Site.
1.1 Yankee Gulch Baseline Groundwater Monitoring Well Network
Figure 1-2 is a map depicting a portion of the lease and relevant existing and
• proposed structures. The ground water monitoring network is represented by
the red symbols as described in the legend.
