These sai]s <br />farmed in loamy, old allltviai material. <br />In a representative profile (fig. 11). the surface laver <br />is light ravish-brown loam about 5 inches rhicl:. It is <br />nancalcarnaus. The subsoil is brown sandy clay loam <br />abant 8 inches thick It is noncalcareous. Tile underlviur <br />material is light--v?n.v sandy loam and ~nrelly loam <br />that is highly calcareaus..lE a depth of •;0 inches. it is <br />pale-brown gravelly sandy loam that is highly ca1- <br />careans. It estends to a depth of about fi0 inches. <br />Stoneham soils absorb water at a modentc ntc. and <br />the available water capacity is modentc. Depclt [n calcareoas material tinges Cmm 3 to 15 inches. <br />Stoneham loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes IS[01-This sail <br />has the profile described as rnpttsentative for the series. <br />It is on uplands near major stream channels in scattered <br />areas throughout the count?. The areas are uniform in <br />shape and range from 51J to 9D acres in size. Runoff is <br />generally medium but is rapid if the soil is unprotected. <br />The hazards of water erosion and soil blowing are severe <br />in cultivated areas. Gullies farm in drainageways in some <br />places. Included in mapping are small areas of sand <br />and gravel deposits and a few small areas of _1 colon <br />soils. <br />,Most areas of this sail are cultivated, but some areas <br />have a cover of native grass.
