However, the pit will be located within <br />one mile of the Arkansas River, Buffalo Creek, & the Buffalo Canal. AlI three are valuable <br />riparian areas providing important habitat to local wildlife. The proper reclamation of this <br />pit could be of great benefit to wildlife in the area. <br />?ne Reclamation re^ommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration ' <br />s designed). <br />Since the pit is located in an area with fairly good game bird populations and will be adjacent.. <br />to cropland I recommend that the pit be graded & sloped to 3:1 or less and reseeded with grasses <br />and forbes that enhance game bird nesting. Tall Wheat Jose, Switchgrass, Sand Bluestem; Western:'.. <br />Wheatgrass, Crested Wheat, and~Side Oats Gramma along with Yellow Clover and Ladak Alfalfa are <br />the recommended ;species. The establishment of shrub thickets would not only provide cover but <br />also food for wildlife and would-he-a tic improvement for the disturbed site. Recommended <br />species to plant,. in~ord`er of preference, are d Plum, Buffaloberry, Chokecherry, Wild Rose, <br />b Sandhill Cherry ES maintenance-free system of lanting the above shrubs is described by <br />Warren Synder in i~April-May 1983 issue o orado Outdoors, a Division of Wildlife public- <br />ation.
