42.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SIIRFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCHS.
• 2.04.11 Fish and 4ildlife Resources Information, (Cont'd.)
(1) (Cont'd.)
The former district Wildlife Conservation Officer, David Ken-
vin, accompanied CWI consultants on field investigations in
February, 1977. Colorado Division of Wildlife regional game
biologist, Hal Burdick, and District Wildlife Biologist,
Terry Reed, of the Bureau of Land Management in Montrose were
also contacted in February 1977.
The field observations and data available from the Division of
Wildlife indicate that the study area (the study area extends
three miles north of the mine surface facilities encompassing
Boise 2,300 acres) is an important winter range for both deer
and elk. The amount of use on the area depends on the severi-
ty of the weather and depth of snow. An indication of the
variability of this use on these lower elevation habitats is
shown in the following table of elk observed during winter
trend counts near the study area.
Muddy Creek Aerial Trend Counts
Year No. Elk
• 1975 129
1974 129
1973 0
1971 34
1970 29
1969 13
The importance of the section around the study area for big
game is indicated by the harvest data for the West Muddy Game
Management Unit (41521). The study area is on the southern
edge of the 474 square mile unit.
Harvest data for Muddy Creek Game Management Units
1975 1974 1973
Deer Harvest 440 445 312
Elk Harvest 548 499 567
No. deer hunters 1,364 1,119 713
No, recreation days 5,326 4,114 No
Record
No, elk hunters 2,493 1,876 1,723
No. recreation days 11,659 8,543 No
Record
Revised 08/01/84
• Revised 10/01/87
85
