42,04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.

2.04.11 Fish and Wildlife Resources Information, (Cont'd,)
(1) (Cont'd.)
Wildlife Habitats
The areas surrounding the Orchard Valley and Orchard Valley
West Mines are no[ substantially different from the areas to
the east or west along [he North Fork of the Gunnison. The
habitats range from the pinyon-juniper type through a transi-
tion zone up to the mountain brush type (see vegetation sec-
tion 2.04.10(4). There is considerable overlap of these habi-
tat types and some special habitat features found among the
types. Riparian habitats are found along Stevens Gulch and
East Aoatcap Creek streams, and West Roatcap Creek and Terror
Creek, pecennial streams.
Species Distribution and Abundance
In the Wildlife Appendix is a list of species found in the
general area. The following species and signs have been ob-
served by BLM personnel in the study area during April and
May, 1977:
Birds
• Golden eagle
(nest & young)
Kestrel
White-throated swift
Tree swallow
Scrub jay
Oregon junco
Blue-gray gnatcatcher
Bewick's wren
tdagpie
Mammals
Mule Deer
Elk (pellets)
Rock Squirrel
Coyote (tracks fi den)
Porcupine (signs)
Badger (burrows)
Mountain Cottontail
Bushytail Woodrat
Fie13 investigations were conducted on the study area adjacent
to the Orchard Valley Mine site, and in Stevens Gulch on Feb-
ruary 6th and March 6th, 1477. Some snow was still present on
the level, and on north and east facing slopes. The south and
some west facing slopes were bare or melting fast.
Several deer were seen immediately north of the mine site and
fresh tracks were seen at scattered locations south of the
site. No fresh elk sign was observed. Due to the mild weath-
er, few deer or elk migrated into the study area from high el-
evations during the 1976-77 A pair of golden eagles has been
sighted over the permit area periodically. For more informa-
tion, see Section 2.05,6(2),
Revised 08/01/84
• Revised 10/12/86
Revised 10/01/87
84
